What is the difference between SWL and WLL?
SWL (Safe Working Load) and WLL (Working Load Limit) are often used interchangeably, but WLL is the modern preferred term per ASME B30.9. WLL is the maximum load a component is certified to lift under normal service conditions. SWL is an older term that sometimes included additional safety factors. Always check manufacturer documentation for exact definitions.
How do I calculate sling tension at an angle?
Sling tension increases as the angle from horizontal decreases. The tension factor is 1/sin(angle). At 90° (vertical), factor = 1.0. At 45°, factor = 1.414. At 30°, factor = 2.0. Use our Sling Angle Calculator for instant results.
What size shackle do I need for 10 tonnes?
For a 10-tonne vertical load, you need a shackle with WLL ≥ 10 t. A Crosby G-209 1-1/8" (9.5 t WLL) is undersized — use the 1-1/4" G-209 (12 t WLL) for safety margin. Use the Shackle Size Calculator for exact recommendations.
What is the safety factor for wire rope?
ASME B30.9 recommends a minimum 5:1 safety factor for wire rope in lifting applications. Some applications require higher: 10:1 for critical lifts, 3.5:1 for certain specialized equipment. Always verify with your engineering team and applicable regulations.
Can I use a screw pin shackle for permanent installation?
No. Screw pin shackles are designed for temporary connections where the pin is checked regularly. For permanent or long-term installations, use bolt-type shackles (like Crosby G-2130) with nut and cotter pin, which resist pin loosening from vibration.
What is the difference between 6×19 and 6×36 wire rope?
6×19 has 19 wires per strand — stiffer, more abrasion-resistant, good for static lines. 6×36 has 36 wires per strand — more flexible, better for cranes and winches where the rope bends around sheaves. Both have similar breaking strengths for the same diameter.
