Screw pin vs bolt type — which should I choose?

Screw pin shackles (G-209) are for temporary, frequently disconnected rigging. Bolt type shackles (G-2130) use a nut and cotter pin and are required for permanent or semi-permanent installations, or anywhere vibration could rotate a pin loose.

Can I side-load a shackle?

Side loading reduces WLL dramatically. Per ASME B30.26 and Crosby guidance: 45° from centerline reduces WLL to 70%; 90° side loading reduces it to 50%. Multiple sling legs should load the bow, not the pin side.

What does the size marking on a shackle mean?

The fractional size (e.g. 3/4") is the nominal body diameter at the bow. WLL and manufacturer mark are forged into every rated shackle — never use an unmarked shackle for lifting.

How often should shackles be inspected?

ASME B30.26 requires inspection before each use, plus periodic documented inspections (at least annually, more often in severe service). Remove from service any shackle with wear, deformation, or pin damage exceeding manufacturer limits.

What is the difference between WLL, Proof Load, and Breaking Load?

WLL is the maximum load for normal use. Proof Load (usually 2× WLL) is the test load applied during manufacturing to verify no permanent deformation. Breaking Load is the load at which the shackle fails — a minimum of 3× WLL for Grade 4, higher for Grade 6 and 8. Never confuse them — only WLL is the working limit.

What is the difference between anchor shackles and chain shackles?

Anchor (bow) shackles have a rounded bow that can accept multiple sling legs or wide-bodied connections. Chain (dee) shackles have a narrow oval dee bow and are designed for in-line, single-leg loads only. Using a chain shackle for multi-leg rigging rotates it off-center and significantly reduces capacity.

How do I secure a screw pin to prevent it from backing out?

Tighten the pin hand-tight, then back it off a quarter to half turn so it can seat under load. Safety-wire (mousing) the pin through the collar hole and the shackle ear to prevent rotation during load cycles. ASME B30.26 requires mousing wherever vibration or repeated load cycling could rotate the pin.
