Chain Sling Inspection Checklist — Grade 80 & Grade 100 (ASME B30.9)

KEY REQUIREMENTS

ASME B30.9 requires a visual inspection before every use and documented periodic inspection at minimum annually. In severe service: quarterly. Remove from service immediately if any link is worn more than 10% of original diameter, elongated more than 3% of rated length, or shows any deformation or heat damage.

Documentation Requirements

OSHA 1910.184 requires inspection records for rigging hardware. A complete record should include:

Date of inspection
Inspector name and qualifications
Sling unique identifier (serial number or tag)
Sling specification (diameter, grade, WLL, number of legs)
Each finding (including "no defect found" observations)
Disposition: continue service / remove for repair / retire
Next periodic inspection due date

Frequently Asked Questions

How often must chain slings be inspected?

ASME B30.9 requires a visual inspection before each use, plus a documented periodic inspection by a qualified person at minimum annually. In severe service — corrosive environments, high-frequency lifts, abrasive contact — inspect quarterly.

Are the inspection criteria the same for Grade 80 and Grade 100 chain?

The rejection criteria are essentially the same (wear >10% of original diameter, elongation >3%, etc.), but Grade 100 chains often have manufacturer-specific inspection instructions that must also be followed. Both grades require legible grade and WLL markings before each use.

Can a chain sling with surface rust still be used?

Light surface rust is generally acceptable — clean it and inspect for link wear. Pitting corrosion (deep pits) reduces strength and must be evaluated by a qualified person; when in doubt, remove from service.

How long must inspection records be kept?

OSHA 1910.184 requires records to be maintained but specifies no retention period. Industry practice is to keep records for at least 5 years after the sling is retired. Records should include: date, inspector name, findings, and disposition (continue service / repair / retire).

What happens to chain slings used at high temperature?

Grade 80 chain slings: full WLL up to 200°C; derate 10% from 200–300°C; derate 25% from 300–400°C; do not use above 400°C. Inspect after every high-temperature use. Grade 100: check manufacturer datasheet — limits are typically similar.

Can a damaged chain link be repaired by welding?

No. Chain links must never be repaired by welding, heating, or any other means — this destroys the heat treatment and voids the WLL. Replace the entire sling or component. Retired slings must be marked or destroyed to prevent accidental reuse.
